The ARINS (Analysing and Researching Ireland North and South) Project is a partnership between the Royal Irish Academy and the University of Notre Dame’s Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies. Media Mill has recorded multiple instalments of ARINS’s ‘My Identity’ conversation series, each held at the RIA. This series seeks to understand the diverse identities and traditions on the island of Ireland and how they are understood, felt, expressed and promoted.
As well as being live conference events with up to 200 people in attendance, the sensitive subject matter of the My Identity talks necessitated additional planning and preparation between Media Mill and the event stakeholders of the RIA and ND. This was to ensure the successful capture of multi-camera conference recordings while being mindful of the topics being discussed.
The ARINS Project required high quality, multi-camera recordings of multiple instalments of their My Identity conversation series. As well as the recordings, Media Mill would also facilitate the live audio PA mixing for the onsite audience.
Media Mill had several pre-production meetings with the stakeholders from the RIA and ND to understand the overall scope of the series, its presentation, and the running order of each session. A location scout was also conducted at the RIA ahead of the first session to plan out the relevant camera positions and take note of the various audio and lighting considerations of the venue. Media Mill also assembled a 3-person crew to assist with the setup and capture of audio and video on each of the shoots.
For each session, Media Mill’s team arrived onsite the morning of each session to begin setup of the various camera, lighting and audio equipment. Each session made use of 3 cameras to allow for maximum coverage of the stage and keynote speakers. Audio was mixed live by Media Mill crew via the onsite PA system for the audience, with a separate audio mix being recorded for use in the post-production phase of the project.
Media Mill designed a suite of animated graphics which would be used to ‘brand’ each recording session. Each session was edited by cutting back and forth between each of the 3 camera feeds to show the relevant speaker, with additional supporting graphics such as presentation slides featured where necessary.
Each recording is posted onto the ARINS website to act as reference material for further academic research, and for encouraging further debate on the topics raised in each instalment. The videos also act as a means of helping the ARINS Project secure more funding for their research programmes, and to help encourage more speakers to participate in future My Identity sessions.
Media Mill’s professional conference recordings of the ARINS Project help encourage future debate and enrich academic research on the topic of what it means to be from Northern Ireland.
